Dubai, United Arab Emirates: As part of its commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility, the Engineering Services Group of Al Shirawi participated in the 14th cycle of the annual ‘Clean Up UAE’ campaign organised by the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) on Dec 5, 2015.
Equipped with biodegradable waste bags, employees of the Al Shirawi Group were part of the 2,775 participants involved in picking up waste on the first day of the campaign at the Nad Al Sheba area of Dubai. The combined effort of the participants resulted in the collection of 21 tonnes of waste, in the biggest environmental campaign in the UAE.
The ‘Clean Up UAE’ Campaign aims to create awareness about local environmental issues with special emphasis on waste management, waste reduction and recycling. The ten-day long campaign took place in all the Emirates and major cities of the UAE. The official tag line for this year’s campaign was ‘Exploiting Nature, Exploiting their Future – Get up and Clean-Up!’
Al Shirawi’s participation in the event is driven by the desire to make a positive environmental impact. Dr. Zakir Malik, Corporate Manager – Human Resources said, “At Al Shirawi, we want to do our part to contribute to a sustainable future for the UAE. We have a responsibility toward environmental protection. As UAE residents, our responsibility extends beyond the workplace and into the community.”
The Emirates Environmental Group, a Dubai-based environmental awareness civil society group, launched the ‘Clean Up UAE’ campaign in 2002. Since then, the annual event has grown into one of the biggest clean up campaigns in the country. This year’s event began with hoisting of the Clean-Up UAE flag, followed by the opening speech by Habiba Al Marashi, Chairperson of Emirates Environmental Group.
Every year, educational institutions, private companies, government organizations, and individual members of the community participate in the Clean Up UAE Campaign to raise public awareness on local, national and global environmental issues. The campaign concluded on December 16, 2015 in Dibba Al Hisn.
